In plain words
Not tapas, not holy waters, not the śāstras, nor japa: for crossing the ocean of saṃsāra, nothing avails but serving the good.
We must serve the good man. Mother, father, teacher: honour all of them and serve them. Attend to their needs. But if you defy your elders, disregard your parents' words and say you are doing some great sādhana, this is not sādhana. God does not accept it. Tormenting living beings and worshipping God: God too has no liking for that. First of all, love living beings. Then you will be one who has loved God. God dwells in all beings. With the right feeling we must honour the right people in the right way. But for our welfare we must keep certain rules. Where the qualities are not right, we must form no tie at all. But bow to everyone. While we are students, we must form no ties with others at all. There are boy students and girl students. If boys form connections with girls, such a fellow is lower than a dog. If you take to such a wrong path while you are a student, you will become lower than dogs. You will be one who has cheated his parents. Born from the womb of such parents, you are going to waste. Such a birth itself goes to waste. Such a life is of no use to us. What kind of life should there be?
If he does not worship Śiva to his hands' content, if he does not tell Hari's glory till his mouth aches, if he does not hold compassion and Satya within, why was he born, a blight on his mother's womb?
What should come of our studying? True good qualities must blossom in us. That is the inner meaning of our education.
The books are filled with learning in plenty; the heads are filled with mud aplenty.
What use is it? All the learning stays in the books. All the mud stays in the head. Is this education? No, no. We must clear away the thoughts that are in the head.
