In plain words
Hṛt + dayā. The heart is that which is filled with compassion. The heart is that which is filled with kindness. The kind heart alone is the temple of God. If you ask where God is, He is in the heart itself. God is the One who has made His dwelling in such a heart. God is not elsewhere, in some temple or in churches or in mosques or in holy places. God is in the heart of each and every one. Now people are making such a heart impure. They are making the heart unclean. So even all the karmas they do are filled with sorrow, with grief and with unrest. What is the reason man cannot attain Ānanda? He is not using his heart in the right way. The heart is of great importance. Nothing else has the value it has. Humanness has gone on growing precisely on the basis of such a heart.
A Nation That Has Morality Is the Better Nation
Man today has achieved a great deal of progress in worldly life and in science, but morally, spiritually and in Dharma man is sinking lower day by day. Moral values themselves are vanishing. He cannot recognise even the Satya of what man is. He is living like an animal. He roams like the beasts. He is kept going merely as a life with no breath in it. That is not it. For a life that has breath in it, morality alone is what matters most. Morality itself is honesty. Honesty itself is the true nation. That is precisely why it has been said, “A nation with morality is the true nation; a nation without morality will perish.” For a nation, morality itself is what matters most. Nīti means morality. For this very morality, from ancient times they said, “Satyaṃ vada.” Because people kept speaking Satya alone, morality went on standing firm. Next, “Dharmaṃ cara.” We must go on practising Dharma. “Satyaṃ brūyāt”: always speak Satya alone. This is morality, the proper mark of nīti. “Priyaṃ brūyāt.” This is Dharma. And this Satya, too: how should it be? It should be pleasing. “Anudvēgakaraṃ vākyaṃ satyaṃ priya hitañcayat”: that is, this Satya should be pleasing, wholesome and joyful.
