Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We must regard this body not with the feeling of Ahaṅkāra that says “I”, but as an instrument that helps us attain God. This is my body. This is my Buddhi. This is my citta, this is my sense organ. This is my antaḥkaraṇa, you say. Who am I? No one asks himself this question. When you say, “This is my handkerchief,” the handkerchief is one thing and I am another. In the same way, when you say “my body”, the body is one thing and I am another. Who are you? Hanging back from recognising this truth, people take only the sights they see to be real and put their faith in them. This body is an instrument for showing forth Satya. Yet in this body the most divine principle of the Paramātma lies contained. All these are nothing but matter. All these are nothing but negatives. What is the positive? You must regard all this as positive and experience it so. You must see that the negative does not even come into your mind. These negatives give out nothing but negatives. The root cause of the unrest of today's world is this very leaning on negatives. All this is matter. You are the master. Master the mind, be a master mind. You must become a master. That is the true vidyā. That, and nothing else: bookish knowledge is not the true vidyā. In this material, transient life there are so many things to be achieved in order to show forth the ideal.

Prema, Sacrifice, Character

Above all things, it is Prema and sacrifice that matter most. Once upon a time Queen Victoria was reigning. She had a prime minister by the name of William. He was a man of great intelligence. He was a man of great learning. A great statesman. Such a man showed forth divinity by Prema and by sacrifice, and went on carrying out his duty. Whoever he spoke to, he spoke with affection. Whatever work he gave anyone to do, he gave it with affection. Unrest was not to be seen in him at all. Lord Brails, writing his life, cited this. “That statesman Williams is an embodiment of God,” he said. For it is sacred qualities that are the proof of God. Where there is selfless Prema, where there is selfless sacrifice, where there is selfless Ānanda, there alone God dwells.
