Passage 5

In plain words

Charity Itself Is the Ornament of the Hand

Students! First and foremost, cast out from your hearts the rubbishy idea that education is for jobs. Jobs are needed, certainly, to support a family. But education did not come into being merely to support a family. Do those with no education at all not support their families? So inquire well into the principle of our ancient culture of Bhārata. ‘Hastasya bhūṣaṇaṃ dānaṃ, satyaṃ kaṇṭhasya bhūṣaṇaṃ.’ Charity itself is the ornament of the hand. Through charity you must grow into people full of compassion. Sacrifice itself is true enjoyment; to be without it is itself a disease. You must not fall prey to such a disease; you must draw close to sacrifice. Only then will you be people who have truly nurtured humanness.

Though Man Dies, Values Are Eternal

In this world nothing else has the value that man has. Who gives gold its value? Man alone. Who gives land its value? Man alone. Man, who gives value to everything, is losing only his own value. What is the reason? He is not nurturing human values. Values alone are eternal. Even when man dies, values stand for ever. To lead such humanness onto a petty path is a great mistake. There is no greatness in being born a human being; you must nurture human values. Many people take the date of birth to be very important and keep inquiring into its good and bad points. But death itself is the foundation of rebirth. So before you die you must earn a good name, become worthy of God's grace, and grow in Prema for God. A life without Prema is like a house without a lamp, like a coin that will not pass.

No ‘Welcome’, No ‘Send-off’

Students! Today we have taken Giri-gāru as Vice-Chancellor in place of Venkatraman. But I am not saying ‘welcome’ to anyone, and I am not giving anyone a ‘send-off’.
