Passage 4

In plain words

Wanting to develop this education to some extent, he took on many debts and went on suffering. One day I called him: ‘Nārāyaṇa Bhaṭ! Why do you worry over good work? Good work is God work. You need not be so anxious over good works. I will look after it. You are doing good work. There is no selfishness, no self-interest in you at all. It is truly an ideal for the world to practise, for the good of others.’ After I gave him My word in this way, he went on living his life in peace. But when time, karma, cause and duty come together, you cannot help leaving the body. He left that body. After that, he handed over the responsibility for it to Swami. While he was still living, I paid off the debts he had taken on. I did that so that he would be at peace. After this, good teachers and ideal workers who show the ideal in their lives came into it. All of them, all the teachers, are people whose lives are sacrifice itself. They are brahmacārīs, every one. They kept their lives well set on the goal and went on striving for God's grace. The very labour they put in is the root cause of these two institutions growing as they have today. All of them, this Gaṅgādhara Bhaṭ, Śaṅkara Bhaṭ and others, took part in it, and toiled day and night at the work. Muddenahalli was very backward. But now it has grown in every field and has made itself beautiful too. Hostel, guest house, classrooms: it has them all. They think the root cause of all this is Swami's grace alone, but no, no. The labour they put in is also a root cause of it. However powerful the current may be, without a positive and a negative it is of no use at all. So though Swami is the positive, the negative called effort must also carry a principal power. Negative and positive, both of them coming together, built buildings of Ānanda through unity alone. Now the two institutions have grown well and are giving the students Ānanda to experience. The students who come and join, too, are all of good character. The moment they enter that institution, spirituality and morality spring up in them.
