In plain words
The Heart Is Not the Body
We must seek the path that belongs to our heart. The heart is truly ever full of Ānanda. It is truly ever filled with the highest love. It is truly one with Śānti. Śānti is not in some place outside; Śānti is in the heart itself. But the people of today turn even that Śānti into unrest. Then how will you get Śānti? Śānti must spring from our heart. The heart is the foundation of sacred qualities. The body is made up of the impure kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and matsarya, the six inner foes: such is the body. Compassion, Prema, forbearance, sympathy, Satya: the heart is made up of sacred qualities like these. We must regard all that comes from this heart as sacred. You must not fasten the body onto this heart at all. Your body is something separate. The body is like armour that the heart has put on. But because understanding humanness has become hard today, man is wasting his life through things that bring him harm. How sacred human life is! How blessed human life is! How full of merit human life is! How precious human life is! We do not know its worth at all. We must try to recognise its worth. Mind, Buddhi, citta, the senses: all these are the upādhis of the body. We recognise only the nature of these upādhis; but towards the principle of the Ātma we make no effort at all. We must recognise the principle of the Ātma, which is their foundation. Only when we recognise this principle of the Ātma does humanness find its fulfilment. To find fulfilment we do many kinds of sādhana. There is no use whatever in doing these sādhanas. Fill the heart with sacred feeling and with faith, and then do any work at all: everything becomes sacred. If you make the heart impure, however many sādhanas you do, there is no use. Every one of them will be fruitless work. First of all, make your heart pure. See that these wicked feelings do not enter the heart. For man, kāma, krodha and lobha, these three, are the deadliest enemies of the spiritual life.
