Passage 5

In plain words

The Body Is an Instrument

Made of the five elements, a frail frame, when it will leave you no one knows; they spoke of a span of a hundred years, but do not trust that word in your heart; in childhood, or in the prime of youth, or in old age, or in the feeble years, in a town, or a forest, or in the midst of the waters, when it will leave you no one knows.

Why should we make so much effort, take so many pains, over this body that is like a water bubble? Since we are alive, we must perform some meaningful karma. We must live an ideal life. We must give Śānti and happiness. The body itself is the root cause of everything. Taking this body as an instrument, we must, through it, experience Śānti and joy. It is merely an instrument and only that; it is not equal to life itself. Now, we have put up just one fan. The fan is turning. Air comes from it. Where is this air coming from? Is it coming from the fan? No, no. The air is everywhere. When that fan turns towards us, we feel this air. Turn the fan called your mind towards God. You will get the air called Ānanda. But if you turn the fan called mind towards Prakṛti and think the air has not come, whose fault is it? You must turn your mind towards God, but you must not turn it towards the body made of the five elements. We believe this principle of the body, impermanent and transient as it is, to be eternally real. For its enjoyment we go through many troubles. For its happiness and joy we do many deeds. But all these are nothing but useless work.
