Passage 13

In plain words

Why are you shedding streams of tears? Or do you not like my attaining nirvāṇa? Do you not like my reaching the sacred Paramātma!” He went on putting questions in this way. Then Ānanda wiped away his tears: “Brother! Your attaining nirvāṇa is a great Ānanda to me. But the two of us have lived as two bodies with one life. I am grieving for my own nirvāṇa. I cannot live without you. So grant nirvāṇa to me too,” he said. Then the Buddha said, “Nirvāṇa is not a thing that someone hands over. Sāyujya is not an object that someone hands over. Sākṣātkāra is not a gift that someone bestows. It is not something that comes when you ask. It is not something given out of favour. We have to win it by our own understanding. The cause of everything is the one divinity alone. The root of everything is divinity alone. So turn your vision around. Do not think, ‘I am the brother, you are my brother.’ Cultivate samyak dṛṣṭi,” he taught. Contemplating that samyak dṛṣṭi, Ānanda sank deep in Ānanda. While he was sunk in Ānanda, Gautama was attaining nirvāṇa. Ānanda had no memory that he had attained that nirvāṇa. The reason: brahmavid brahmaiva bhavati. If you change that vision, how great the result! Today, even looking at God, people think of Him as Prakṛti. They told us to think of Prakṛti too as God.

Believe in All as God, Love Them and Serve Them

The sādhakas of those days tried to know themselves. Without knowing oneself, what use is there in knowing the world? What fruit comes in this world? All is full of sorrow, full of sorrow. All is not full of Consciousness. All is full of the objects of the senses, he said. That is not what matters to us. We must look on all as God. No one need give up their parents. Believe in all as God and love them. Love them, serve them. There is nothing wrong in it. Whoever you do it for, think, “I am doing it for God.” Only when we foster such a feeling of one Self in all can we gain a life that is divine, noble and ever new. Rāmakṛṣṇa Paramahaṃsa said it.
