In plain words
Learning Used for a Living Has the Mark of Pravṛtti; Learning Used for Life's Highest Goal Has the Mark of Nivṛtti
Today we are teaching the students human values in many ways. Along with that, we must look a little into those children's condition and circumstances, and try to teach them accordingly. You must not set out to pack heavy subjects into the heads of weak children beyond measure. First of all, we must make some efforts to make weak children strong. Enquire well into the kind of weakness they are suffering from, in body and in mind. The first thing we must teach those children is: health is wealth. We must teach them that health itself is the greatest fortune. We must make a fitting effort to keep their health on the right path. Only after that should we bring this system of education into them. ‘Vidyā’ came from the word ‘vit’ in the Sanskrit language. ‘Vit’ means Jñāna. ‘Vit’ also means light. ‘Vit’ has another meaning too: Ānanda. A feeling that is radiant, sacred and broad is itself called ‘vit’. In English they called this word ‘vit’ education. Where did the word "education" come from? It came from the word 'educare'. What does educare mean? Its meaning is to bring out. How is it brought out? To make visible, out of the visible world, what is not visible, and to bring it out. To make what is within turn outward, and to bring it out. The word educare has two meanings. One is what has to be drawn out of one's head; the second is what has to be drawn out of the heart. Reading, writing, holding jobs, earning money, enjoying pleasure: all these come only from one's head. These have come about only for the sake of a living. These too are needed by man. But the second is what comes from the heart. What are the things that arise from this heart? They are there permanently. They are compassion, Prema, forbearance, sympathy, Satya and the other sacred qualities.
