In plain words
These have come about for the sake of life's highest goal. One is a living; the second is life's highest goal. The first has the mark of pravṛtti. The second has the mark of nivṛtti. The first is a negative principle. The second is the power of the positive. Compassion and Prema are not things that come from reading. Prema, Satya and patience do not enter from books. They are there in our heart by their very nature. All these are natural principles. So we must draw these out, by some skilful means, from among what is natural. This is what the word educare means. Drawing out. In this way you must draw out what is within you, what is in the heart, and experience with the body what has been drawn out. All that comes from the head is passing. These are not permanent. These are qualities of the world. For living out one's talent in the world they are certainly needed. These are the paths of pravṛtti. They have come about for the sake of a living; but compassion, Dharma, justice, Prema, Satya, all these have come about not for the sake of a living but for the sake of life's highest goal.
What Comes from the Head Are the Values of Nature; What Comes from the Heart Are Human Values
They have given the heart the name compassion. Hṛt plus dayā: that is hṛdaya, the heart. That heart is called ‘karuṇā’. Only when we experience these two along the right path do we become people who have given the body true health. Human values today are just like this. There are many truths in us that we do not see. But we are infatuated only with what is seen, what is heard, what comes to mind, what delights us. We give not the least thought to what is not seen. So it was said, ‘The unseen will speak out the secret of the fruits of our deeds, O jīva.’ Those unseen things put us through all these troubles. These very things were called the hidden powers. What are hidden powers? The Pāṇḍavas lived in hiding for 14 years. At that time the Pāṇḍavas were there. But they went on living without anyone knowing. In the same way, these sacred feelings are in our heart.
