In plain words
But failing to know them, we think, ‘They are not in us; we are learning them from outside.’ No one hands these over. It is not something the guru teaches. It is not something books give. They arise only from our own heart. They alone are the true human values. All the things that come from the head are values of nature. So the values of nature are one thing, the values of the Supreme are another. Those very values of the Supreme were called human qualities. Today we have lost them. Today the human being appears as a man, but there is no humanity in him. He appears as a man in form, but he does not appear as a man in practice. Today we must draw them out, put them into practice, and experience the joy that we then see. This gives great encouragement to health. When you guard your health, you can foster human values as much as you like.
The First Thing We Must Teach in Human Values Is Unity
No single limb of the body is the chief one. The oneness of all the limbs has become the body. No limb can be called the body. Unity among all the limbs is most necessary. The first thing we must teach in these human values is unity. This is true unity. When there is no unity, how can purity come at all? When you first greet anyone, do not say hello; say brother, brother, and go on growing the bond of kinship. All are children of one father. So we must first teach this: brotherhood of man, fatherhood of God. All are children of God. Each one has his own form, his own country, his own language. We must not regard them as strangers on account of dress and language and country. Because we regard them as strangers, we do not understand this supreme principle. They are not strangers at all. All are of one family. Every person is a member of the world family. Recognise that truth first and teach it to the children. When you teach children, you must live it and show it. First, be good; second, do good; third, see good; fourth, talk good.
