Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

But they are not in you.

Practice Comes First

They are teaching everyone Satya, Dharma, Śānti and Prema. Practising it is a greater propagation than teaching it. Children in these times are very clever. Through the influence of this Kali age today they are able to learn any number of modern subjects with ease. But in spiritual matters they follow the guru who teaches. If we practise first, before we teach the children, and then teach, the children too will surely practise it. Children keep watching and listening very cleverly. ‘That is what our teacher tells us. Is the teacher doing it?’ That is what they watch for. ‘If these are truly noble words, if these are noble paths, why should he himself not do them?’ Doubts like that arise. ‘When he does not practise it himself, what right has he to tell us to practise it?’ So they ask among themselves. So, first practise at least one or two things, and then try to teach them. Only then do we become people who have given the children right education. He has been given the name ācārya. What is the meaning of ācārya? He who has practised and then taught is the ācārya. So today the name ācārya has no value at all. Because they teach only from an acquaintance with books. That is why they cannot see the hoped-for result soon. From this day on, whether foreigners or people of any country, all must think of the oneness, the feeling that we are all children of one mother, and go on experiencing manyness within manyness.

First of all we must achieve unity. For want of unity every country, every society, every caste, every religion is breaking into pieces. Disunity itself is the root cause of these extreme differences. First of all you must experience unity in a special way. To Sai, people of any country, any religion, any age, any language are equal.
