In plain words

Education Is for Knowledge, Not Merely for a Living

Students! Today everyone is scrambling after big jobs. There is nothing wrong in that. But money is misused because of scrambling after jobs beyond one's level. Whatever work comes to you according to your level, do it properly. Develop the confidence to stand on your own feet. Build up the self-confidence that says, “I can stand.” One who has no self-confidence cannot accomplish any work. Education is gained for the sake of knowledge. Not merely for a living. Labour is for a living. You must take up a job too. You must also wish for the progress of the country. But as for your aim, you must set it on divine humanness. When you go on some bad path, you must keep thinking, “I am not animal, I am man.” You get angry. When anger comes, you say so many words. You hurt others. You wound the hearts of others. At that time remember at once, “I am not dog, I am man.” Think, “Anger is dog quality, not my quality.” Only when you think in this way will these dog qualities go far from you. Say to yourself some ten times, “I am not monkey, I am man,” and then enter into your work. These monkey thoughts will surely go. By bringing the mind under control you can achieve divine works without limit. So Patañjali set out the right basis: “yogaḥ cittavṛtti nirodhakaḥ.” When you check the movements of the citta, you can achieve anything.

The Root Cause of All Man's Sorrows Is Just the Growth of Desires

First of all you must keep checking the nature of the mind. A small example for the children. With just one wife or two wives, that man goes quite mad. Well, this mind has 10 wives. The 5 organs of action and the 5 organs of knowledge. Each one goes on wanting something of its own. The eye wants to see a good latest film and says, “Take me there.” When the eye asks in this way, the tongue asks for something else. “Listen, when I was coming along the road I caught the smell of masala dosa.
