Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If, without giving Prema, you ask, “O God! Give me that, give me this,” how will He give? First you must earn the right to ask God. It comes only through service joined with Prema, not through any other sādhana.

Mokṣa lies in the subtle

Man is made up of the Annamaya, Prāṇamaya, Manomaya, Vijñānamaya and Ānandamaya kośas. The body is the Annamaya kośa. It is gross. The Prāṇamaya kośa is subtle. Subtler still than this is the Manomaya kośa. Subtler than the Manomaya kośa is the Vijñānamaya kośa. Far subtler than the Vijñānamaya kośa is the Ānandamaya kośa. So if you want to attain Ānanda, you must go beyond the gross Annamaya kośa, the subtle Prāṇamaya kośa, and the subtler Manomaya and Vijñānamaya kośas. It was with this in view that the Vedāntins said, “Mokṣa lies in the subtle.” If you are to experience such Ānanda, you must remember the Name of God and gain the Prema of God. Now and then I say, ‘Pibare rāmarasaṃ.’ That is the juice of Ānanda. You must drink that juice. When you mix water with sugar, it becomes a sweet drink. In the same way, when you join Prema to the remembrance of God's Name, it turns into nectar. You must taste such juice of Ānanda, such juice of Prema, and share it with others.

Grace comes only when you follow the command

Many of you keep thinking, “Why is Swami not talking to us?” But you do not inquire, “Am I conducting myself as Swami has told me, or not?” I too have certain rules. When I give you what you desire, you must do as I say, must you not! But are you doing it? You are not. My words and My command have value. I do not like to lessen the value of My word. When you give no value to My command, how can I accept your wishes? God has neither anger nor hatred. But as your ‘action’ is, so too will God's ‘reaction’ be.
