Passage 5

In plain words

That is why I keep telling you to take part in service to society. You were born in society, you grew up in it, you received your education through society, you earned your money through society, and through society itself you are enjoying happiness. So to show fitting gratitude to society is your first duty. Only when you do good deeds will you have shown gratitude to society.

Today the state of the world has been turned upside down. Humanness itself is nowhere to be seen. What does humanness mean? You must set the five senses on the good path. You must develop the good feelings God has granted, such as compassion, truth, forbearance and peace. But you push these good feelings aside and develop evil qualities such as lust and anger. Where do evil qualities come from? They arise from the very food you eat. So take sāttvic food; then only good feelings will arise in you. The good feelings God has granted are right within you. But you take no account of them. Reading, writing, holding jobs, earning money, building houses and mansions: all these are the gifts of pravṛtti. All these are things you acquire by effort. But the qualities of nivṛtti, such as compassion, Prema and forbearance, lie hidden within you yourselves; you need not acquire them, they arise from your very heart. All bad feelings start from the head. Embodiments of Prema! Do not make the head your support; do not follow the head. The head leads to many dangers, and in the end it takes off your very head! If you follow the head, you will be bound in a worldly life. So follow the heart. Turn your vision inward. From the heart arise the human qualities called Satya, Dharma, Śānti, Prema and Ahiṃsā. When current enters a bulb through a wire, it gives light. In the same way, when the current called Satya enters the bulb called Śānti through the wire called Dharma, the light called Prema is obtained.
