Draupadī's Forbearance

When Aśvatthāmā cut the throats of the Upapāṇḍavas, Arjuna bound him and brought him: “Draupadī! I will cut the throat of this wicked man who killed your sons. Anoint your head with his blood and bathe,” he said. Then Draupadī: “Arjuna! As much as I grieve because Aśvatthāmā killed my sons, so much will his mother grieve if you kill Aśvatthāmā now, will she not! So do not set your hand to this deed,” she pleaded. More than that, she fell at Aśvatthāmā's feet: “My sons were little children; they never thought of doing you any wrong. How could your hands rise to kill such as these, my dear?” That is all she said; she spoke no harsh word. That calm, that very spirit of patience, kept her safe in every way. Even in times of hardship man must stay calm. Draupadī came by such great forbearance only through Kṛṣṇa's teaching. In whatever situation, she never went beyond Kṛṣṇa's word. It is because of such supreme devotees, such mothers true to their husbands, that Bhārat enjoys well-being even today.
