Passage 6

In plain words

Take Me as your example. I expect nothing. All of you know: in Puttaparthi we built a big hospital and started a university. Whatever we start with good feeling goes on turning out well. I have only one wish: that everyone should live well and stand as an example. After the bhajan you say, “Lokāḥ samastāḥ sukhino bhavantu,” don't you! Everyone must be happy. There is no gain if only a few are happy. If everyone is to be happy, Satya, Dharma, Śānti and Prema must flow in everyone. Children have very tender hearts; their feelings are pure and selfless. So if you sow the seeds of Satya, Dharma, Śānti and Prema in the fields of their hearts, they will grow into great trees in the future. Through them the country will be greatly improved. So we must teach children sacred qualities right from the primary school level. If parents at home and teachers at school help the children in the right way, the children can rise to great heights. “Tyaja durjana saṃsargaṃ, bhaja sādhusamāgamaṃ”: you must keep away from the wicked and make friends with the good. If you conduct yourselves well, even the wicked will see you and change for the better.

Human Values Must Be Practised and Shown

Embodiments of Prema! Since God has given you a tongue, you must speak the truth; since He has given you hands, you must give in charity; since He has given you ears, you must listen to sacred things. You must take up the work that purifies your five senses. For this very purpose we have arranged this gathering here. Jumsai of Thailand is doing very great work in education in human values. But this is not work one man can do. All must do it together. Does a single thread become a cloth? No. Many threads must come together.

In the same way, if our organisation is to develop, unity is very necessary. Each must go on putting right the other's mistakes. You must not show anger toward children. You cannot always oblige, but you can always speak obligingly. You must speak to them gently and sweetly.
