Passage 3

In plain words

They themselves do not know when they will come back from the office or when they will go out again. Through this modern influence, modern ideas enter the affairs of the home and throw life into disorder. In the name of modernity, you must not give room in your heart to petty feelings. This age is indeed a modern age! But our feelings must be timeless, and of the very highest. Every householder and every housewife must develop human values and shape their family well.

Some people ask which is the chief among the human values of Satya, Dharma, Śānti, Prema and Ahiṃsā. What began in man with his very birth is the principle of Prema. So Prema must be taken as the chief of them all. You must love your parents, your teachers and your fellow human beings. You must respect them. You must welcome the guests and visitors who come to your home. You must give respect and take it. This is not “one way traffic”. Only when you respect others will others respect you. Teachers who teach such sacred things are rare today. Not only the teachers, but the parents at home too: what is the state of their boy? How does he behave when he goes out? How does he get along with his friends? What kind of books is he reading? These are the things they must watch. Some children keep trashy novels in between their textbooks and read them. So parents must watch their children's behaviour with great care and try to set them on the proper path.

Not the ‘Internet’: the ‘Innernet’ Is What Matters

The children's ‘blood, food, money, head’: all of it came from their parents, did it not! So children must first of all show gratitude to their parents. But through the influence of this Kali age, children are not showing gratitude to their parents. They show respect when they happen to come before their eyes, but once they are a little out of sight, they give them no thought at all. The Veda taught, “Mātṛdevo bhava, pitṛdevo bhava, ācāryadevo bhava, atithidevo bhava.”
