In plain words
Criticism makes greatness grow, not lessen
Love everyone. Bow even to those who revile you. For the divinity in everyone is one! The principle of Prema in everyone is one! Do not fall prey to a moment's passion and spoil your minds. Pray to God with Prema. Criticism like this keeps coming to every Avatāra. Some ask, ‘Why must they come?’ Only when criticism comes does their greatness grow. Wherever there is light, right beside it there is also shadow. We should not be afraid because a shadow has come. Even in the shadow there is sunlight. The bond between sunlight and shade is oneness, not separateness. So not only about Swami: about any elder too, whoever criticises in whatever way, do not take any action at all. Let it go, saying it does not concern us. When the faults they speak of are in us, we can correct them. When those faults are not in us, we need not mind their words. Saying, “Those faults are not mine; they are someone else's,” stay free and happy. If they revile among themselves, it belongs to them alone. So why should we be troubled? Lead your life with the harmonious feeling, “Whatever happens is for my good.”
We must keep an even mind towards blame and praise
Many more great works are yet to take place in the days ahead. There is no work that Sathya Sai cannot do. He can do deeds that astonish everyone. “Lokāssamastāḥ sukhinobhavantu.” That all should be happy: this alone is Sai's aim. No hardship of any kind comes to those who wish for the happiness of all; even if it comes, it can do nothing to them. A small example: once, when the Buddha was going somewhere, the demoness Asūyā confronted him and threatened him: “Buddha! I will kill you and eat you.” The Buddha smiled: “Are you coming to kill Me out of jealousy of Me? I love you too,” he said. As soon as the Buddha spoke in this way, that demoness Asūyā turned into a dove, the symbol of Śānti and Prema, and flew away.
