In plain words
“Think what you like, I lose nothing. What I want is purity,” it says. The moment the iron gets rid of its rust, the magnet draws it. If you foul your mind with bad qualities, bad thoughts and bad company, and then: “O God! Draw my mind to You,” if that is your prayer, how can He draw it? First of all you must make the mind pure. For that you must set the senses on the holy path. Think only good, see only good, hear only good, speak well, do good deeds. When you live your life like this, God will surely grant you His grace.
Ridding the senses of their faults through thought of God
On Śivarātri, of the sixteen kalās of the mind fifteen dissolve, and only one kalā is left. For that one remaining kalā to dissolve as well, you must utter the Name of God with your tongue, from your heart. Do you know what a spirit of sacrifice the tongue has? When it tastes something and finds it sweet: “Fire of the stomach! You enjoy this yourself,” it says, and sends it inside. If it is bitter, it spits it out at once. Not only that. The tongue conducts itself with great dignity and decorum; it never crosses its own threshold into another's house; whatever work it has, it does inside.
O tongue, knower of tastes, with your fondness for sweetness, I tell you what is true, what is good, what is highest: utter the sweet syllables, ‘Govinda, Dāmodara, Mādhava’!
Every sense does one task each, but the tongue has two tasks. One is tasting; the second, speaking. So keep the tongue somewhat under control. Otherwise it will drag you into many sins. When anger comes, keep silent. Do not talk as you please just because you have a mouth.
