In plain words
In the doctor's view it may be a cataract, but to tell the truth, it is the effect of evil sight. Sight itself is creation; the eye itself is scripture. So first you must restrain your sight.
All sādhanas such as japa and tapas give only a passing satisfaction. However many sādhanas a man does, if he does not restrain his sight, he cannot receive their fruit in the least. Along with restraining your sight, you must keep your tongue under control too. There are lakhs of ‘taste buds’ in the tongue. But man today, used to many kinds of tastes, eats food that ought not to be eaten; he speaks words that wound the hearts of others. As a result he is losing the sacred power the tongue has. Through misuse of the senses, man's span of life is wasting away. First of all, man must try to restrain his sight and his tongue. When you restrain these two, a new power springs up in man. A power that no amount of tapas brings is gained when you keep your sight and your tongue under control. Instead of speaking needless words with the tongue: “Rāma! Kṛṣṇa! Govinda!”: could you not utter the sacred Name like this?
O tongue, knower of tastes, lover of sweetness, I tell you what is true, what is good, what is highest: recite the sweet syllables “Govinda, Dāmodara, Mādhava!”
The person before you is no stranger; what is in him, too, is you. Though the bodies are different, the Ātma in both is one and the same. So you must not hurt others with harsh words. That is why I keep saying, Talk less. But you pay no heed to my word. You do not know how badly this will bring you down in the days to come.
