In plain words
With time on your hands, when it is the gossip of the village, you are ready at once, with great attention; but when the sweet talk of God is told so lovingly, you will not stay quiet and attentive, O ears! Going out of your way to the cinemas, again and again you go and go and see, and are never satisfied; but to keep you a moment before God is very hard, O eyes!
Man looks at the whole world with his eyes open, but the moment he goes before God he shuts them. What a strange thing! The senses are the root cause of merit and sin. So when you do not let the senses enter into sinful deeds, and use them on the holy path, God grants you what you need without your asking.
Ask for nothing, O mind! Ask for nothing, O mind! Knowing that the more you ask, the lower it sinks, and that if you do not ask, the work is done quickly: Ask for nothing, O mind! Did He not cherish Śabarī, who never asked? Jaṭāyu, who died asking nothing for himself: did He not go to him at the last and grant him a blessed end? Ask for nothing, O mind!
There is no need to ask God for anything. Did Jaṭāyu ask? Did Śabarī ask? No. When the heart is pure, God grants His grace without being asked. However powerful a magnet may be, it will not draw rusty iron to itself. Then, they say, the iron thinks, “This magnet has no power”; and then what does the magnet say?
