Passage 9

In plain words

She went to Yaśodā's house to light her lamp. While she lit the lamp, Kṛṣṇa appeared to her in that flame. Gazing on Kṛṣṇa's divine and auspicious form, she forgot herself. Though her hand was burning, she stood without moving in the least. Sensing that some smell was coming, Yaśodā came running. “My dear! What is this? Why do you stand like that while your hand is burning?” she said, and took her by the hand and pulled her aside. Suguṇa said, “Mother! In that flame Kṛṣṇa appeared to me. Gazing at Kṛṣṇa I forgot myself.” The Gopīs who were there heard these words and overflowed with joy. “To our Suguṇa, they say, He appeared; in Nanda's house, they say, Gopāla appeared in the lamp, they say …” they sang as they went to their homes.

What is the inner meaning of this? When the mind is fixed on God, God appears everywhere. For that, your vision, thoughts, speech and actions must be pure. When you lead such a pure life, you need not seek God; God Himself comes seeking you. Once Annie Besant said, “People say they are searching for God. What madness is this! God is everywhere. So there is no need to search for God. God Himself comes searching for the good man.” The one who is worthy of God's Prema is the Good man. He alone is the true Godman. Only when you become worthy of God's Prema will your life be fulfilled.

Embodiments of Prema! The Prema in you is pure; but now and then, through certain delusions, you make it impure. This alone is why your worth is falling. I will give a small example of this and conclude. Pure gold shines very brightly. Its price is high too. Suppose some copper has been mixed into it. Its brightness lessens; its value lessens too. If some brass is added as well, its brightness and value decline still further. Man is like pure gold.
