So the ties you form must be of the best. All powers are present in man. But man is unable to know the powers within him, unable to understand them. That is precisely why he lives as a lesser being.
Whatever God asks for is for His devotees alone
“Aṇoraṇīyān mahatomahīyān”: from the atom to the vast, God alone pervades all. Even so, God too has some desires. They are not for His own sake; they are for His devotees alone. Only to make His devotees' lives fruitful does God act as though He too had some desires. You must understand this well. When Kucela came to Him, Kṛṣṇa: “Kucela! What have you brought for Me?” He asked. He accepted the beaten rice he had brought, and granted him every comfort and fortune. Vāmana went to Emperor Bali and asked for three paces of ground as a gift. What for? Only to redeem him. One day Kṛṣṇa went to a Gopikā's house and said He was very hungry. The Gopikā was greatly astonished: how could Kṛṣṇa, who is God, be hungry? “With the whole cosmos in Your belly, is it right to set food and delicacies before You?” she said. “Even the thin buttermilk in your house will do; pour some into a glass and give it to Me. That is enough for Me,” said Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa expressed this wish only to redeem her.
One day Durvāsa, with his thousands of disciples in tow, went to the Pāṇḍavas, who were passing their days in the dense forest living on roots and tubers; he said that all his disciples were very hungry and that by the time they had gone to the river, bathed and come back, a meal must be made ready for them, and with that he went off. Draupadī grieved that they had nothing with which to feed so many, and prayed to Kṛṣṇa to bring them through this trouble somehow. Kṛṣṇa appeared before her: “Sister! I am very hungry. If there is anything to eat, give it to Me,” He said. To this Draupadī: “Kṛṣṇa! Is our plight unknown to You? Did You think we were in Hastināpura? Or did You think we were in the forest? Had we been in Hastināpura, I would have given You whatever You asked for.
