Passage 13

In plain words

If instead you do business in the name of spirituality, everything is spoiled, and you will have spoiled the name of God too. You may take money enough to meet the expenses you incur. But no one spends anything for Me, and I take nothing from anyone. The people of Madurai have met the expenses of this programme. Coming here and the meals cost money. But you must take only as much money as meets that cost. You must not fix a ‘membership fee’ of so much. What is the membership fee in spirituality? Prema alone. You must give and receive Prema. I hope that from now on, keeping this in mind, the members of our organisations will not collect fees of any kind from anyone. You all know this. In our educational institutions we do not take a naya paisa from the students. In our hospitals we give medicines free and do operations free. If you work truly wishing the good of your fellow men, the money comes together in one way or another. But if you work with making money as your aim, in the end only loss comes.

So do not hanker after money. Nurture morality and discipline. What is the worth of the Ātma? Who can set a price on the Ātma? The Ātma is priceless, infinite, immeasurable. So in spiritual organisations you must take no fee of any kind. When we follow such a path, the whole world will enter the spiritual path. Today, wherever you go, there is nothing but unrest; whatever papers you look at, nothing but terrible news. If you experience Śānti, Śānti will blossom all over the world. So lead a serene life and give Śānti to the world.
