Passage 7

In plain words

“Tyāgenaike amṛtatvam ānaśuḥ”

It is ten years since the hospital was built in Puttaparthi. Believe it or not, we have performed free operations for seventy thousand people. Now it is a full year since the hospital here was opened. Here too we have performed thousands of operations. For these, many crores of rupees are being spent each month. Many people do not know this. But however many crores it costs, I will not give up this sacred work. Health is the greatest wealth. When he is in good health, man can achieve anything. So we look on it as our duty to take in the sick and bring them back to health, and we serve them with love. In this there is no urging from anyone, no ‘force’ at all. It has come from the ‘source’ that is Prema. I hope that this hospital will grow still further and give the poor the help they need. Our Chief Minister of Karnataka, Kṛṣṇa, gave the land needed for it and helped a great deal. His heart is filled with the sacred spirit of sacrifice. “Tyāgenaike amṛtatvam ānaśuḥ”: it is sacrifice that brings immortality. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, who came here today, is asking that a hospital like this be built in Bombay as well. He says they will give the land needed for it. In Bombay, the pollution of the air, growing from day to day, is becoming a danger to people’s health.

Only sin and merit go with you in the end

Embodiments of Prema! You were not born as human beings to pile up wealth. When you leave, can you take even a single naya paisa with you? You cannot take even a handful of earth. If you really could take a handful of earth with you when you leave, by now even earth would be on ration! Only the two, sin and merit, go with you in the end. So keep away from sin and gather up merit. ‘Helping others brings merit; harming others brings sin.’ Help as far as you are able.
