In plain words
Faith is the first step to Ānanda
Today every man longs for Ānanda. For the sake of Ānanda he reads many books; he goes on pilgrimages; he visits many elders and listens to their teachings; he does ever so many pūjās; he practises ever so many japas; he performs ever so many tapas. But there is no Ānanda at all in these. In man there are the five sheaths, the annamaya, prāṇamaya, manomaya, vijñānamaya and ānandamaya kośas. Though the ānandamaya kośa is within him, the Ānanda in man is dwindling to nothing. Man thinks that property and physical comforts will give him Ānanda. This is foolishness. Physical comforts give only a limited joy. True Ānanda is limitless. It is not had from outside; it springs from the heart alone. The heart is the seat of God. What is had from it alone is true Ānanda. To experience such Ānanda, one must first of all develop deep faith. From faith arises Prema, from Prema Dharma, from Dharma Satya. It is through Satya alone that God reveals Himself. It is through God alone that Ānanda is attained. So the root and basis of Ānanda is God alone. The root and basis of God is Satya alone. The root and basis of Satya is Dharma alone. The root and basis of Dharma is Prema alone. The root and basis of Prema is faith alone. But the man of today has no faith even in himself. To be without faith is to be without breath! The ancient ṛṣis taught that trust is what matters most for man. The śāstra and Dharma: we must regard these two as our two eyes. But today even brāhmaṇas are forgetting them.
You who always trust the śāstra as the truth, O vipras, in accord with the Veda! You who offer up your bodies for your country's sake and flourish, O kings of kings! You who, with wealth and grain and a righteous nature, live in plenty, O Ārya Vaiśyas! You who give food by your calling of tilling the land and live a happy life, O śūdras! Why pass all your time idly? Acceptable to all people and true is the path of Bhakti: take it up; granting this world and the next, Sai Baba will truly sustain you.
