In plain words
“What is all this! You are not thinking of what you should think of! Bhaja Govindam: think of divinity. What use is there in thinking of what is not divinity?” warned Ādi Śaṅkara. We must always dwell on the thought of God alone. In truth God does not exist apart. You yourself are God. You and I are one. The six inner enemies alone are the root cause of man's wicked ways. Animals too have these six inner enemies. Man has them. Then what is the difference between man and animal? Animals eat. Animals sleep. Animals enjoy their desires. Man sleeps. Man enjoys. What is the difference? “Prajñānaṃ Brahma.” That Prajñāna alone is what belongs to man in particular. When he has the discrimination called Prajñāna, he does not grieve at all. Everything has come, and is going. Why hold on to these passing clouds and grieve? We must hold on to the principle that does not pass. That alone is the principle of our Ātma. That alone is the principle of our consciousness. That alone is our divinity. That alone is our sacredness; know it, and “the knower of Brahman becomes Brahman itself”. Yesterday I spoke of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's declaration, “Mamaivāṃśo jīvaloke jīva bhūtas sanātanaḥ”. “In all there dwells only a part of Me,” said Śrī Kṛṣṇa. But then, the worries, sorrows, hardships and fits of anger seen within this part: where have they all come from? We have filled our hearts with feelings bound up with animality. Send far away the feelings filled in through this animality. Drive them out. Run away from bad company. Fill yourself with feelings true and eternal. There is water in a cup. If you want to pour milk into that cup, you must pour out the water that is there, must you not! If, without doing that, you pour the milk too into the water, water and milk both go to waste. You have filled your heart full of wicked feelings. If you fill good things on top of such wicked feelings, these and those both are spoilt. Neither is of any use to you. So drive away the bad. Fill the heart with what is sacred. Then you will become a sacred being. When we want to become pure, we must keep our vessel clean. We must keep it simply empty.
