Passage 10

In plain words

When we keep the heart pure, we can fill everything into it. How many things do we earn? How much money we earn. But in the end, where do all these go? At last, to whom do they all belong. To fill a belly one span wide we earn lakhs. Does all this earning fill the stomach? No, no. For the sake of a momentary life we go through so many troubles. Our body itself is impermanent; all this is like a water bubble. Mind is like a mad monkey; don't follow the mind. Don't follow the body; follow the conscience; follow love. This above all we must learn in our studies today.

We must fill our heart with Prema

You study so many subjects. “Why study every kind of learning only to die? One must study the learning that has no death.” What do we gain from these studies? It becomes a way of filling the belly as long as one is in the world. The educated man fills his belly. The uneducated man, the beggar too, fills his belly. Is filling the belly the great thing? We must fill our heart. We must fill the heart with Prema. Prema alone gives everything. Try to fill the heart. That itself is compassion. Hṛt, daya: hṛdaya. Full of compassion: that is the heart. We must fill that heart with Prema. We must not waste even a single moment. We must foster Prema. Today they push this Prema away, lead it into an impure path, and in the end turn it into despair. You yourself have built up all the ties and kinships of the family. They came in the middle. They go in the middle. They are not lasting at all. All these are like passing clouds. We need not pine for such things. What should you grieve over. You must strive for your Ānanda. Your Prema, and that alone, must come to you. Show this Prema in all. People today, instead of sharing Prema, are growing hatred, jealousy and anger. What use is it to study so many subjects? In the end we do not share Prema. Hatred, hatred: this is the nature of a great demon.
