In plain words
You must not hanker merely after the body's strength and its contentment. You must make the effort it takes to keep the mind under your control. You must not be slaves to the mind. You must make the mind itself your slave. However great his strength and ability, when a man becomes a slave to the mind he becomes weak. The strength and ability that are in the mind are found in nothing else in the world. From the mind alone the most precious qualities arise. If you lose money, you can somehow work hard and earn it back. If your health declines, you can go to a good doctor and regain your health. But if we lose our human qualities, we become people who have lost everything. Human qualities are not had from books, or from teachers. When in daily life we develop good feelings and go on doing good deeds, human values stay at our heels, in our home, at our side, and protect us.
Not bahu-‘matis’: receive the nija-mati
Embodiments of Prema! You are learning many kinds of knowledge and gaining many powers. Above all, you must foster human values. Every power is contained in them. Satya is our God before our eyes. Dharma is the foundation of our life. It is with this in view that the culture of Bhārata declared, “There is no Dharma higher than Satya.” So you must pour out your life to protect Satya and Dharma. You must not hanker after worldly prizes. These are not true prizes. With just one mati you fall into so many troubles. And with bahu-‘matis’, you will be worse than a monkey. What you must receive is not a bahu-‘mati’; you must receive the nija-mati. The nija-mati is the sacred word that springs from the heart. Every power springs from the feeling of the mind.
