Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You must reverently obey God's command. Only then will peace and security be yours.

Among the nine paths of Bhakti, friendship matters most

Embodiments of Prema! If there are no holy thoughts in your mind, however many pūjās you do, however many bhajans you sing and however many vratas you keep, there is no good in it. What is the inner meaning in teaching the nine paths of Bhakti, “Śravaṇaṃ kīrtanaṃ Viṣṇoḥ smaraṇaṃ pādasevanaṃ vandanaṃ arcanaṃ dāsyaṃ snehamātmanivedanaṃ”? Follow whichever of these paths appeals to you. If you follow none of them, there is the risk of going down the wrong road. Of them all, what matters most is friendship. That is, you must cultivate friendship with God. Only after friendship does the offering of oneself become possible. For this, both Bhakti and Prema must be in you. You must love everyone. You must give Prema. You must receive Prema. Man today is ready to take Prema, but not ready to give Prema. This is not ‘one way traffic’. Only when you give Prema can you receive Prema. Compassion and Prema must spring up in your heart. One who has no compassion and no Prema may well be called a demon. The heart is that which is full of compassion. Only one who has such a heart is a man.

The ‘addresses’ every person ought to know

An envelope sent by post must carry a From address and a To address. An envelope with neither of the two is thrown into the Dead letter box. You too must come to know your From address and your To address. That is: “Where have I come from? Where am I?” This is what you must enquire into. “I have come from God. I am in humanness”: this is what you must recognise. Only then will good thoughts spring up in you. In this way, only when you keep your From address and your To address in mind every day can you live as true human beings. You must strive to obey God's command reverently and so win God's grace.
