Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

This is the fundamental truth.

‘Reflection, reaction, resound’

Embodiments of Prema! Love all. Suppose, as you walk through the bazaar, you see a baby on its mother's hip. If you look at that baby and smile, the baby too will look at you and smile. Suppose a person who hates you comes face to face with you. If you start abusing him the moment you see him, will he keep quiet? He will pick a fight with you right there on the road. You see! In this way, all that you experience in this world is ‘reflection, reaction, resound’! Without these three there is no world at all. So develop Prema in full measure. Hate no one. If you hate, that hatred comes back and hurts you yourselves. Even if the one you meet is your enemy, greet him with Prema: “Hello my friend, how are you?” He too will greet you with Prema. Even the most wicked person can be won over by Prema.

Once, as the Buddha was travelling somewhere, a demoness came before him, her eyes blazing red, and roared, “Hey, who are you?” The Buddha, smiling gently, said, “I am your friend.” As soon as she heard the Buddha's loving word, a change came over the demoness. Saying, “I too am your friend,” she turned into a dove, the emblem of Śānti, and flew away. What is its inner meaning? From Prema alone Śānti comes forth. So you too, like the Buddha, go on loving everyone. Love even those who hate you. You will surely attain Śānti. Today everyone in the world longs for peace; they are searching for peace. But wherever you go in the world, there are only Pieces; no Peace is to be seen. Śānti is in you yourselves. You yourselves are embodiments of Śānti; you yourselves are embodiments of Satya; you yourselves are embodiments of Prema; you yourselves are embodiments of God. Not the Buddha alone: all the great souls taught Prema as the chief principle. Without Prema there is no life at all. One without Prema is no human being at all. So develop Prema. Only then will you attain true Ānanda.
