Passage 3

In plain words

Only then shall we attain the state full of Ānanda. In this way each person bore many kinds of hardship and built such sacred holy places. They built all the great holy places: Bhadrācalam, Badrīnāth, Kedārnāth, Amarnāth. Śaṅkarācārya walked to all these holy places, bore many hardships, and won victory in every quarter. Whoever it may be, when he has to do any task, he has to receive the cooperation of the people. Only when unity comes together can we be blessed with this joy. Unity has declined in this Kali age. There is no unity, no purity; but enmity has entered and brings many hardships. Where the feeling of hatred enters, there unity is nil. So today unity is vital for us. Unity itself is the strength of human life. As the resolve, so the change that comes about. As the resolve is, so precisely is the action that takes place. As the action, so the fruit one gains. As the fruit, the goal we reach. So the root cause of our failing to reach the goal today is this: the resolves are not in order. Man's resolves must be right. You go about acting as though you love, saying ‘God, God’. This love is not true Prema. It is false love. Made-up love. Forming a bodily bond, forming ties with money, gold, goods, vehicles and the like, everyone loves; but no one trusts this love. All this is hypocritical love. I too keep getting many cables: ‘Swami! We love You. So draw us close to You,’ they say. Sai is not one to be won so easily. Just because you say you love Me, I cannot believe it. What sacrifice is there in this love? What power does this love have? The word they give today, by tomorrow they break. Can one trust the love of such speakers of untruth? It must spring from a heart that is true and eternal. Love is heart to heart. What is the relation of this to what is called the Ātma? Between what is called the Ātma and what is called Brahman there is no difference. Brahman is nothing but the form of the Ātma. The form of the Ātma is the very principle of consciousness that dwells in the heart. In every man there is the power of consciousness. Without that very power of consciousness, man cannot live. That consciousness itself is the form of the Ātma. That consciousness itself is the form of Brahman. That itself is full of eternal Ānanda. That itself is full of supreme Ānanda. That itself is full of the Ānanda of yoga. That itself is full of the Ānanda of non-duality. Who has kept such a heart, full of Ānanda, within? Words leap over fortress walls. Look at the foot, and it does not cross the threshold. Trusting such words, people in the world are cheated in many ways. Those who truly have Prema, who truly have a heart, do not make speeches. They keep proving it in their conduct. But today conduct is nil. Words alone abound. Such people are nothing but out-and-out thieves, not honest people. Relying on such thieves, trusting such thieves, can we reach the goal? So we need not talk. We must melt the heart and lay a fitting channel for it to flow. Only when the heart melts and flows does God's heart embrace it. One can talk in many ways. So we must not give in to this kind of thing. However great the hardship, the loss or the sorrow, we must hold to the level of the heart and keep striving. But today we have no resolve to reach such a sacred goal. How can those who do not understand what the goal is reach it? Prema is one; it has no two or three pieces. Cutting it into pieces and going about saying ‘love for me, love for you’ is not real Prema. It is merely made-up love. Within fancy there is only fancy. Our heart is one, only one.
