Passage 4

In plain words

You think Swami's health has not been right for some days. My health is very good, very good. My health is very good, very good, very good. Health has to do with the body. But I am not one who belongs to the body. Because you think of Me as the body, it seems to you that My health is not right. “As the feeling, so the result.” Do not think of Me as the body. I am the indweller. Between Me and you there is no difference. All powers are in Me. I go about in this way only to satisfy others, to satisfy the doctors; there is no ill health of any kind in Me. I am healthy at all times. Not today alone: up to ninety-six years I will stay just like this. I can do whatever is needed. But those who take this body as their footing see old age. But for Me there is no old age. I am ever the same. Whatever is needed, I can do for Myself. But this is your body. It came into being for your sake. If you change it, it will change in any way at all. Think, ‘Our Swami is strong.’ I am strong, for certain. There is no weakness in Me at all. My limbs may look weak. But Mine is the form of the Ātma, not a form of limbs. At any time at all, think of God as the embodiment of the Ātma, not as an embodiment of shape. Push attachment to the body aside. Put your faith in the plane of the Ātma. Only when you develop spirituality will you understand the embodiment of the Ātma. See for yourselves: if I kept the shape in mind, I could not take even two steps. So, without thinking of the shape, put your faith only in the embodiment of the Ātma. Take the Ātma itself as life-breath. I will always be fine and healthy.

Students! All of you have such strength. But you ruin your strength with your own hands. In your hands lies the whole of your youth. In your hands lies the whole of your life-force. You are the life-force, not the strength of the body. You came, bringing the body merely as a help. (Showing the silver glass on the table) This is a tumbler. There is water in it. The water's support is the tumbler. The tumbler's support is silver. Then what is the support of the silver? That is the form of God. That is the form of Viṣṇu. It is not made of matter. To the eye that sees matter it appears as matter alone. So put away the outlook that sees matter. Recognise, ‘To our Swami form is not what counts; Ānanda alone counts.’ Contemplate the embodiment of Ānanda. Ānanda will surely spring up in you.

Many are grieving, ‘For a week now everyone has been speaking, everyone has been greeting, but our Swami has not said a single word.’ Mine is at all times filled with Prema. When I come among you, how much strength, how much Ānanda! A joy beyond telling arises. I have no need even of food and recreation. Your Ānanda is My food. You too must think of it in that way. As Viśvāmitra was taking Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa to guard the sacrifice, by the bank of the river Sarayū: ‘Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa! Sit down. You have come with me not merely for an outing. You are coming to guard the sacrifice. You must give up food and sleep entirely. Because there is this food and sleep, you are unable to achieve anything.’ Then he gave them his teaching. That same Viśvāmitra, in Daśaratha's presence: ‘Daśaratha! You look on them as children. They are not little children. These two are not mere forms.’ Seated on the bank of the Sarayū, he told them two mantras there. You are not the body but the Ātma. You are not merely the power of consciousness. In you there is a power beyond the power of consciousness. You are joined with that power. If you recognise these two, you will surely lack nothing in food and recreation. In that way, journeying with Viśvāmitra, they guarded the sacrifice. Wherever he went, Ānanda was the very form of Rāma. Grow that Ānanda in you. But do not take the shape to be Ānanda. This body is not Mine; whose this body is, who knows. It is bound up with food.
