Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

A hovel of filth, a servant's basket wasting with diseases, a tuber stirring since its birth, a thornbush that cannot cross the ocean of worldly life, a quiver of arrows: rise and see! However we may think of our praise of it, this body as steady, do not trust, O mind! Take refuge at Hari's feet.

Do you regard this body as your body? That is a great mistake. Give up the sense of the body. Develop attachment to the Ātma. Only then will you turn into the embodiment of the Ātma. Otherwise a pain in the leg, a pain in the arm, all pains of this kind start up. These pains are not lasting, ever. Pains last only as long as one is deluded. When you give it up, free of delusion, there is no tie with this body at all. What is meditation? It is giving up attachment to the body and developing attachment to the Ātma. If you keep on developing attachment to the body all the time and do not develop attachment to the Ātma, there is no use. No one belongs to the body. The body is the body's own. But I am God's property. You are that real I. Go on taking all along with you; at the very last you become one alone. There is no difference of I and you at all. However much study you do, if you develop attachment to the body, it goes to waste. Learning must be for the sake of teaching others. But not for yourself. The body is not you. You are the real I. Develop that real I. The shape keeps on changing.

Embodiments of Prema! The principle of the Devī Navarātri, its inner meaning, is nothing but giving up attachment to the body and developing attachment to the Ātma. Give it up within this Navarātri; you can see how great you become. You are very weak; develop attachment to the Ātma, and all the weakness goes. You must develop the feeling, ‘I am God, I am God.’ To develop attachment to God is most necessary.
