In plain words
This alone is the right way to take away all our worries. Do not abandon so divine and splendid a way, enter some other path and bring unrest upon yourselves. All hardships have arisen to give us Ānanda, not to make us suffer. So even when hardships come, we must think that they have come to give us happiness. But in that time of hardship one does not know happiness. As time passes it becomes clear that those very hardships are giving us happiness. Ānanda comes to us only through hardships.
Embodiments of Prema! The wealth in man that never dwindles, the wealth that grows, is Prema alone. If we sit anywhere and keep remembering the name of God, even those who hear it gain peace of mind. When we sing songs, even babes in arms and animals feel great comfort. When you remember the name of God, even the hardest heart melts and flows. We read in the histories of Bhārata, and we see, of devotees who experienced divinity in this way.
As much as you have suffered, so much happiness will you gain
When we go on digging a pit somewhere, all the earth beside it piles up like a mound. We need not take fright, saying, ‘What a big pit there is!’ Right beside it is the mound. The earth of the pit is the earth of the mound. The earth of the mound is the earth of the pit. If you take the earth of the mound and put it in the pit, it all becomes level. In the same way, as many hardships as you have suffered today, so much happiness too will you enjoy. ‘Ah! I have fallen into a pit of hardships. How am I to fill this in? How am I to bear it?’ You need not grieve so.
