In plain words
With the digit of the crescent moon sparkling on the crown, with a lovely mass of matted locks, with the gleam of the sky-river flowing in the locks, with the striking eye upon the brow, with a throat as dark as the black jamun fruit, with a serpent bracelet upon the hand, with an elephant's hide wound about the waist, with ash smeared all over the body, with a broad vermilion mark drawn on the forehead, with lips reddened by betel, shining in the six śāstras, laughing the dark lilies to scorn and plundering them, with a body of bright dusky hue, the Dweller in Parthi has appeared today in visible form.
Embodiments of Prema! You must try to recognise what Śivarātri means. ‘Śivam’ means what is auspicious. So Śivarātri means the auspicious night. Who is Śiva? Śiva is nothing but the consciousness that moves in all beings. Not in human beings alone, but in cattle, birds, beasts and the rest too, Śivatva keeps blazing forth. We need not wait a year for Śivarātri. We must regard every day as Śivarātri itself and spend it in purity. Śiva's consciousness alone is blazing forth everywhere. To limit such Śivatva to one place, to one time, is ignorance.
