In plain words
Do not trust in what changes and be deceived
As long as there is strength in our body, we may enjoy ourselves with games and songs. But even these must have a limit. As age advances, the body made of the five elements changes in many ways. You know, M.S. Subbulakshmi used to sing magnificently. But after she grew old, she grieved that her voice was not serving her. When she raised this with Me: ‘We must not overuse anything. You spoiled your voice yourself by overusing it’, I told her. The voice, the sight of the eyes: all of them change with time! Do not trust in these changing things and be deceived. Take as your support the Ātma principle, which does not change. Man meets with hardships through his own faults alone. Only when he corrects his conduct does he become better. ‘I am a human being. Food and drink are not the main thing for me. Character alone is the main thing for me’: so one must feel. When his qualities are not right, man has to suffer many troubles.
Keep the mind fixed on one God to the last breath
They have named divinity ‘Sat’. ‘Sat’ means that which exists for ever. The followers of each religion worship divinity by a name of their own. Muslims say, ‘Allāhu Akbar.’ They believe that Allāh is their one and only protector. For Muslims or for Hindus, for anyone at all, the protector is God, and He is one. You must say from your heart, ‘I want God.’ You must desire the ‘Divine’, not ‘deep wine’. Once you have believed, ‘Rāma alone is my God’, you must go on remembering Rāma's Name all your life. But man today has no steady Bhakti. Today he worships Rāma. Tomorrow, if some trouble comes, he takes down Rāma's photo, puts up Kṛṣṇa's photo and worships it. A devotee used to do Śiva pūjā every day. Without a break he chanted the pañcākṣarī mantra, ‘Om Namaḥ Śivāya’. After some time, thinking that Śiva had done him no good, he took down Śiva's photo, put it away in the cupboard and put up Rāma's photo. While he worshipped Rāma, he enjoyed peace for a while. But after that, unrest began. He put Rāma's photo too into the same cupboard.
