In plain words

He went to his guru and said, ‘Rāma has done me no good, Swami!’ On his advice, he put up Kṛṣṇa's photo. Saying ‘Gopālakṛṣṇa!’ without a break, he kept up his japa. But within a few days unrest came again, and he took Kṛṣṇa's photo down too and put it away in the cupboard. One day a woman devoted to the Goddess came: ‘Sir! What is the use of your worshipping Rāma and Kṛṣṇa? Worship the Goddess’, she advised. He put up the Goddess's photo, lit incense sticks and began the pūjā. But he saw the fragrance from the incense sticks drifting towards the cupboard. ‘Alas! I lit these incense sticks for the Goddess, not for the gods in the cupboard! Another has no right to enjoy what is offered for one’: thinking so, he decided to take the photos out of the cupboard. Then the Goddess appeared: ‘Foolish man! Is this your Bhakti! For some days you worshipped Rāma. For some days you worshipped Kṛṣṇa. And how many days will you worship Me? On what day will you put Me in the cupboard! This is not true Bhakti. You must keep your mind fixed on one God to your last breath. You must lead a spiritual life, unshaken by the hardships and losses that come in worldly life. Pure feelings must grow in your heart. Only then will you become pure’, she taught him.

If you want to rise to a high state in life, you must keep remembering God's Name, without forgetting it and without changing it. Whatever the circumstance, you must not change your mind. But the mind too is only a fabrication! ‘Mana eva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ’, it has been said. For bondage or for liberation, the mind alone is the cause. The mind keeps wavering only because of desires. Only when you root out your desires can you experience Śānti. Merely by giving in charity you cannot become good. Offer yourself to God with single-minded Bhakti. Only then will Śānti and happiness come to you in every way. Control your desires. Control your resolves. Then the whole world will come under your control. Satya and Prema: these two alone are eternal. They are right within you. There is no Dharma higher than Satya. Only when you take Satya as your basis and practise Dharma does Prema arise in you.
