Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

‘Va’ means conducting oneself. Only one who overcomes Māyā, learns the knowledge of the Ātma and proves it in one's own conduct is a mānava. With the faith that Mādhava is not apart from oneself, one must face with courage the hardships and losses that come in life. Only one who has qualities like faith, courage and daring is a human being. One who knows the value of a ‘diamond’ keeps it safe and puts it to good use. In the same way, one who recognises the power of the mind does not let it turn towards worldly things, but sets it in the thought of God. We must strive for the ‘die-mind’ (the dissolving of the mind). As they say, ‘The mind is the root of this world.’ If, without conquering the mind, we go on fostering made-up qualities, what will become of us?! Only when the mind is dissolved does man become a Paramahaṃsa. We must not follow the mind. The fruit it offers looks good on the outside, but inside it is full of bitter juice. The mind is by nature sweet and sacred. But the young today are turning it into a ‘monkey mind’. If one reads big books and does not understand what the mind is, what is gained? Those who read the Bhagavad Gītā and those who talk about it must first understand it and put it into practice. What use is it if we just go on reading without knowing the meaning?! The students are learning the Veda. ‘Ananto vai vedāḥ.’ The Vedas are infinite; they have boundless power. Whether one likes it or not, everyone needs the Vedas. Those who study the Vedas must grasp their meaning and live by it. Man today forgets himself and learns one subject or another. That is man's weakness. Because of that very weakness, man believes in everything except God.

Dear students! You understand all worldly and physical things. But not everyone understands the inward principle. The divinity present within all the forms and names that appear separate is one. Divinity itself is the support; forms and names are what it supports. There is no use in recognising what is supported without recognising the support.
