Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

To him his son matters more than the food. In this way man grows to love one thing more than another.

In life's journey we must cut down the ‘luggage’

Truly, there is not one thing in this world worth longing for. Less luggage, more comfort makes travel a pleasure. As long as there is ‘luggage’, our troubles will not leave us. What is this ‘luggage’? It is our ties of kinship! Only when we give up this bondage shall we be happy in every way. We must not long for anything. To renounce desires entirely is itself Vairāgya. If your journey through life is to be a joyful one, you must cut down the ‘luggage’. All these ties of kinship are like passing clouds. But clouds come only when there is a sky, do they not! Attachment to the body is itself the sky. As long as there is attachment to the body, all these keep deluding us. When someone dies, people weep, ‘Alas, he is gone!’ How long do they weep? They weep a day or two; after that they forget. Nothing is permanent. Even so, we must carry out the actions that are our duty. As long as it is cold, we wrap ourselves in a shawl. The moment the cold goes, we take it off. This body too is like a garment we have put on. It is merely an instrument. As long as we have ties with the world, we look after it. After that we have no connection with it at all. Attachment to the body there must be! But how far? Only as far as carrying out the actions that are our duty! Duty is God. So do the ‘duty’ that is given to you. Beyond that, you must not wind many ties of kinship around yourself, nor bind yourself with them. Today we long for more than we need. We give ourselves over to greed. But however much ‘luggage’ we gather, one day or other we have to leave it all behind and go.
