In plain words
What has to happen to you will go on happening. You must not grieve over anything. Do not grieve over the past. Do not be anxious about the future. Make good use of the present and experience Ānanda. However much you worry, will the time gone by come back? Can those who are gone come back? No one knows what is going to happen ahead. Why should we worry about it? Be happy, saying, ‘We are well now; that is enough.’ If we cultivate contentment of that kind, no worries will trouble us. What, after all, is the nature of worry? It is nothing but a fear the mind has made up. So you must give worry no room at all. As long as you have worries, you cannot be called a devotee. Only he who has no worries is the true devotee. We must feel contentment in everything. Worries begin only when contentment is lacking. What do these worries do? They drag a man down.
Do not set your mind on the body
Embodiments of Prema! The day you are happy is itself a holy day. Ānanda itself is the sign of holiness. Merge your Prema in the principle of God. Live in Prema. Then for you every day will be New Year's Day itself. Does today become New Year's Day just because you cook pāyasam and eat it? No, no. That very day on which everyone is happy is New Year's Day. So you must be happy at all times. If any troubles come, if any sorrows arise, you must tell them ‘Get out’. You are not embodiments of sorrow. You have no worries, no troubles at all. ‘I am a human being. So this trouble is not mine, this sorrow is not mine. I have nothing to do with these,’ you should think. Suppose you get a stomach-ache or a headache. ‘This pain belongs to the body, not to me,’ you should think. These are natural to the body. You must not take the body's nature to heart. Yet as long as it lasts, you must not become dependent on others. You must hold desires in check. It is because of them, is it not, that these troubles come. You fall into troubles only because you build up attachment to the body beyond all measure.
