Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The very first is the upādhi (the body). At a higher level than the upādhi are the senses. Greater than the senses is the mind. Greater than the mind is Buddhi. Greater than Buddhi is the Ātma. So if you keep remembering the Ātma constantly, you can become free from these bonds.

Easwaramma, mother of Īśvara

One day Easwaramma, the mother of this body, went to the well to fetch water. At that moment a kind of daze came over her. As she wondered, ‘Why is it happening like this?’, she heard the words, ‘Amma! I am entering into you.’ ‘Who is this? A ghost? A spirit? Who is it entering into me?’ she thought, and she was badly frightened. Then once more she heard the words, ‘I am entering into you to protect the world.’

The name ‘Easwaramma’ was not given her by her parents. It was a name given by Kondamaraju, the grandfather of this body. Easwaramma means ‘mother of Īśvara’. Even when I was a little boy, he recognised My divinity. He used to say, “Satyam! Though you are young in years, you are very great in intelligence.” Easwaramma was no ordinary woman. She grasped the Satya that she was the mother of Īśvara, and she rejoiced greatly. She came to Me and said, ‘Son! The name ‘Easwaramma’ is a name that has come true for me.’ Wherever she went, everyone addressed her very affectionately, ‘Easwaramba! Easwaramba!’ Whenever she heard that name, great zest and joy would rise in her.

Karaṇam Subbamma, a second Yaśodā

Karaṇam Subbamma was a great devotee, a woman of noble qualities. Everyone in the village respected her. She used to call Me ‘Īśvara! Īśvara!’ By and by a great change came over her mind. All the devotees who came here for My sake took their meals in her house alone. Whatever she did, she did it only for Swami. I was never one to stay at home.
