Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

There alone does ‘divinity’ become manifest. We must not cut up the world into bits, saying ‘This is my India’, ‘this, my Japan’, ‘this, my Germany’. There is only one race, and that is the human race. We must learn the goodness that is in every religion. ‘Religion’ means nothing but Prema. Such ‘religion’ is not to be seen now. Without Prema we would have no bond with anyone at all. So we must follow the religion of Prema. In the modern age people give no thought at all to the religion of Prema.

Our ancients understood well what religion is, and lived it. They took their elders as their ideal. Even in these days, try asking children, ‘Who told you this, my boy?’ They will say, ‘My grandmother told me’, or ‘My grandfather told me’. When we conduct ourselves as our elders tell us, nothing but good comes to us. The young people of today do not listen with their hearts to what their elders say; they do not listen to what they are told; they do all they were not told. Bring a gramophone record and ask them to listen to film songs, and they listen with great interest. They say just what it says; they sing just what it sings. In the end they themselves are turning into gramophone records! Today's man is not living as a man; turning a deaf ear to the word of his elders, he takes to deeds that go against humanness.

Karma itself is man's God

Sankrānti comes to remind us of the sacredness of humanness. “The Lord of all beings.” So every person, every living being too, is a part of God! But because man abandons sacred feelings and lets his mind loose to go where it pleases, faults arise in his conduct. You are young now. At this age your body, mind and Buddhi are all strong and sound.
