Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So, at this very age, you must put your strength to good use and put sacred feelings into practice. What is ‘purity’? The sight must be pure; words must be sweet; the ears must listen only to good things; the nose must breathe in only fragrance. In this way you must use every sense on a sacred path. Man has come into being through karma alone. Karma itself is man's foremost Dharma.

By karma a creature is born, by karma it grows, by karma it dies; karma is God to man; karma is the cause of joy and sorrow in this world!

So we must go on doing karma. What is karma? Merely studying, playing ‘Vāli’ball, playing ‘Sugrīva’ball .... It is not only this much. Our breathing in and breathing out are karma too! Without these, no karma can take place at all.

Do not ‘waste’ your life for ‘taste’!

As we draw the air in, ‘So...’ it goes, and as we let it out, ‘ham...’ goes the sound. ‘So....ham’ means ‘I am that very God’. Eating, dressing showily, roaming about as one pleases... This is not the mark of a man. Wherever we go, people look first at our character. “His conduct is very good. It is such a pleasure to talk with him. Just a look from him is enough to give great joy”: that is what people should say about you. Good character alone gives us joy. We must put our five senses and the five elements to good use. The food we eat, too, must be sāttvic. It is not good to eat with chilli added for no reason. Some people are fond of chilli. Always mango pickle, gōṅgūra... Mango pickle, gōṅgūra! Their minds keep running after taste.
