Passage 3

In plain words

Only when you utter the Name wholeheartedly, with Prema, can you attain divinity

You see! Merely by hearing the Name a single time, the parrot was born a calf, and the calf attained human birth. But man today does not change, though he utters the Name of God not once but many times. You must utter the Name of God wholeheartedly, with Prema. Where there is faith, there is Prema. Only through that Prema can man attain divinity. Man today utters the Name of God, but he does not utter it with Prema. Turning his eyes this way and that, ‘Is that one singing well, is this one singing well, is that one's pitch right, is this one's pitch right, is that one's tune right, is this one's tune right?’, he takes part in the bhajan watching for the faults of others. While someone is singing one song, he is thinking over which song he should sing next. With a mind this unsteady, however many times he utters the Name, there is no chance of his changing. That is why man stays no more than man. Still, by thinking of God he does become pure to some degree. That purity is not something everyone can see; only he himself knows it. Only when you say the Name many times does it take root in your mind. You must keep saying it without a break. “Satataṃ yoginaḥ”: living as a yogī at every moment, setting his mind straight upon the Name, man can change beyond measure.

Whatever the work, only when it is done as an offering to God does it become holy

You need not give up your work. Doing your work, feel, “This work is God's alone.” Whether you talk or play, whatever you do, go on doing it in the feeling, “All of these are God's.” You will surely be blessed.
