In plain words

Nārada went up to the parrot: “O parrot! Will you tell me the glory of Rāma's Name?” he asked. The moment he said ‘Rāma’, the parrot at once fell down and gave up its life. ‘Alas, this parrot has given up its life because I said Rāma's Name!’ Grieving over it, Nārada went to Nārāyaṇa and told Him what had happened. “All right, if the parrot is gone, it is gone. Just now, in a brahmin's house, a cow has calved. Go to that newborn calf and ask; it will tell you,” said Nārāyaṇa. Nārada went to the calf: “O calf! Will you tell me what the glory of Rāma's Name is?” he asked. At once the calf too gave up its life. Nārada went to Nārāyaṇa once more: “Lord! What happened to the parrot has happened to the calf. Is this the glory of Rāma's Name?” he said. Nārāyaṇa: “Nārada! Have a little patience. Just now a son has been born to a certain great king, after he had long been without one. Go and ask that infant,” He said. Nārada: “Lord! That parrot and that calf had nobody to stand up for them. So, even though they died, there was nobody to seize me and call me to account. Now, if that prince should die, my own life will be gone as well,” he said. “No, you must certainly go and ask,” Nārāyaṇa commanded.

Unable to speak against God's command, Nārada went. On seeing Nārada the great king welcomed him with great joy: “Come, revered one! Come in. You have come at just the right time. A son has just been born to me. Bless him,” he said. Afraid deep within, yet outwardly all smiles, Nārada went up to the prince and, softly: “O prince! Can you tell me what the glory of Rāma's Name is?” he asked. The prince burst out laughing: “Mind-born son of Brahmā! Do you, who have learnt the sixty-four arts, not know the glory of Rāma's Name? I shall tell you; listen. When I was a parrot in the tree, you came and asked what the glory of Rāma's Name was. The moment I heard Rāma's Name once, my birth was fulfilled. At once I gave up that body and was born a calf in a brahmin's house. You came there too and asked the same question. Hearing Rāma's Name a second time, I gave up that body too, and now I am born a prince,” he said.
