In plain words
So, students! Do not waste your time merely reading and reading. Some students study ‘day and night’ without sleeping. Their health too is ruined by it. You must study when it is time to study. You must study what is needed. Many children waste their time reading everything that is not needed. Wherever they find a book, they read it. They even pick up newspapers lying on the ground in the bazaar. They look at film pictures; they read film stories. You all know it: open the newspapers and they are all advertisements and film pictures; apart from these there is nothing we learn from them. By reading these worthless papers man is losing his honour and dignity. This is not the learning we should be pursuing.
True learning comes forth from the inner voice. First remove the dirt in your head, and ‘follow’ the teaching of your inner voice. Only when you follow your ‘conscience’ will you be able to live as true human beings. Merely because you have legs, hands, eyes, nose and mouth, you are not human beings. Even tiny worms have legs, hands, eyes and all the other limbs. But may you too spend your life the way they do? No, no. You must set an example. ‘This is man’s true nature. This is true ‘culture’.’ This you must show. We must take our own culture as our ideal.
There is only one caste, the caste of humanity
Along with ‘culture’, you must keep your ‘caste’ in view too. Which is your caste? There is only one caste, the caste of humanity. What is the difference between ‘culture’ and ‘caste’? ‘How should this be done? What should be done? Is this good? Is it bad?’: this is what ‘culture’ teaches. ‘Caste’ is what comes with you from the time you are born. You are human beings. This is your ‘caste’. No one can change it.
