In plain words
If we want good marks in the examination without studying hard, they will never come. Only when you study hard do first-class marks come. If you get good marks without studying hard, you must have copied in the examination. When you get good marks, did you write well? Or did you copy? Your own mind bears testimony to that. So we must do good and enjoy good. Only then shall we find fulfilment in having been born as human beings. You need not pray to God to protect you; your goodness will protect you. That is your true ‘support’. Lawyers today: ‘Testimony... testimony...’ they say. But we need no one else’s testimony. Our own mind is our testimony. We must do the deeds our heart agrees to. The satisfaction of the Ātma is most important. Only when there is satisfaction of the Ātma does the sacrifice of selfishness become possible.
Students! From now on you must develop fine feelings. Because you are students, you must acquire learning. What learning? The learning of the Ātma. Not only that. You must strive for the satisfaction of the Ātma. This is true learning. It is of no use merely to read great big books without cultivating good feelings. Many are always reading and reading, whenever you look. Seeing it, the parents think, “Our boy studies night and day.” But what he is reading, they do not know. Some children put silly stories between great big books and read them. Not knowing it, the parents: “Aha... our boy is reading the Mahābhārata!” they think, and they rejoice. By doing this, the students’ life is ruined; they have no respect in society. We must know what is good for us and read only that. We should not read books that teach a path contrary to humanness.
First of all, students must check their anger. They must attain forbearance. They must be calm. Only then can they understand the right meaning of what they study. At this age students have very pure hearts. So from now on, students must cultivate the feeling of offering themselves to God.
