Passage 7

In plain words

Do you know why you were given hands? To lift morsels of food to the mouth? No, no. To do service!”

‘Without bhajan there is no happiness, no Śānti’

What is service? Whomever you serve, you must develop the feeling, “I am doing it for Rāma, I am doing it for Kṛṣṇa, I am doing it for my God.” ‘Sarvakarma bhagavatprītyarthaṃ’: whatever you do, do it all as an offering to God. I am not telling you to give up your work. Do your work. But whatever work you do, think, ‘This is God's work.’ Only when you develop that feeling will God appear to you. The more you think of the Name of God, the more Ānanda you will have. It is to think of Him in this way that bhajans were arranged. “Without bhajan there is no happiness, no Śānti.” The Name is enough; nothing more than this is needed. For bhajan you need not bring food offerings or flowers. God does not need flowers. The flowers you offer today wither by tomorrow. You make food offerings. How? You show it to God, and you eat it! Then what have you given to God? Offer your Prema. That is God's food.

Satya, Dharma, Śānti, Prema, Ahiṃsā... These five are all gifts of God's grace. Satya has no form. They gave this body the name ‘Sathya’, but Satya has no form. Satya is everlasting; it does not change in the three times. “There is no Dharma higher than Satya”: Dharma arises from Satya alone. Without Satya there is no Dharma at all. When Satya and Dharma come together, Śānti comes about. You say, “I am striving for Śānti, I am praying for it.” Where is Śānti to be had? Is it sold in some shop? No. It must come from you. It is within you. When Satya and Dharma come together, Śānti is won. When Śānti comes, Prema shines forth in you. Then anger, hatred, envy, pretence and show will not come near you at all.
